Dealing

When Life Gives You Lemons…

Today was the first day back to school after spring break.  I think I speak for everyone (in my family, at least) when I say, “UGH.”  I hate having to fight with kids who aren’t tired (because their bodies are messed up because of DST) to make them get in bed and go to sleep.  I think alarm clocks are from Hell.  I haven’t missed packing lunches and snacks and water bottles and homework and spelling and looking through the mounds of paperwork that come home with them each day after school.  Ugh, I say!

I think I get just as excited, if not more so, than my kids about getting a break from school.  My kids are homebodies who would love nothing more than to stay in their pj’s all week, never leaving the house even once.  I am usually right there with them, but wanderlust was getting to me, so I was planning out a family road trip.  Brown-Eyed Husband had to work last week in North Carolina, at a RESORT.  The word conjures up white fluffy robes, drinks by the pool, and most importantly – someone else to prepare, serve, and clean up all our meals.  It sounded good to me (I’d like a break, too, please!!), so I thought we would load up and go with him.  Make a week out of it.  The kids complained, so I had to bribe them with new games for their DS’s.  It was a small price to pay for hours of silence in a car on an 18-hour one-way trip.

But, alas, Life (as it is so wont to do) interfered.  In this case, it was Death and not Life that caused my family’s spring break to veer off of our carefully planned course. We cancelled rental cars and hotel stays along the way.  We rescheduled hotel stays in other cities.  We bought a last-minute plane ticket so B-EH could fly instead of drive to North Carolina.

{Insert Yiddish proverb here: “Man plans, God laughs” (Mann traoch, Gott Lauch)}

We were definitely blessed by getting to see family that we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.  Although we had to miss the actual funeral so B-EH could get on an airplane, we did get to celebrate his uncle’s life surrounded by family at the visitation.

Death is only sad for the ones of us left behind, but we are comforted by knowing that Uncle Bill is in heaven.  I can guarantee you that he isn’t missing us one single bit!

The plans you have laid out before you are steering your life in a specific direction.  Who is planning your life?  Is it you or is it God?  Is your life heading in a direction that will bless you and bring God glory?  If not, you might need to rethink things.  Your soul will thank you.

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

  1. My favorite verse Jer 29:11. He does have such wonderful plans for us we just have to plow through all the stuff in between to get to all of His wonderful, faithful promises to us.

    His thoughts are not our thoughts his ways not our ways. Isiaiah 55:8

    Love you. Going to have to come by and see you soon.

  2. I'm with the kids: I'd give up the RESORT (yes, at one this week) just to chill out in PJs with “y'all” 🙂

    So true: Man plans, God laughs… Sometimes you just have to 'keep on keeping on', adjust and plow forward.
